IT Service Management Explained
|
|
IT Service Management (ITSM) means managing information technology (IT) systems. ITSM is a move away from the technology-centered approaches to managing networks, IT infrastructure and data storage. It focuses upon providing a framework to structure IT-related activities and the interactions of IT technical personnel with business customers and users. A more service orientated industry has emerged in IT Service Management. |
Definition of IT
IT (information technology) use to be narrowly defined as design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware. IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.
As technology has advanced, the term information technology now encompasses many fields. IT professionals perform a variety of duties that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases including: data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as the management and administration of entire systems.
Back Office It Service Management
"Back office" or operational concerns of IT Service Management is also known as operations architecture. For example, the process of writing computer software for sale, or designing a microprocessor would not be the focus of the discipline, but the computer systems used by marketing and business development staff in software and hardware companies would be. Many non-technology companies, such as those in the financial, retail, and travel industries, have significant information technology systems which are not exposed to customers.
In this respect, ITSM can be seen as analogous to an enterprise resource planning (ERP) discipline for IT operations. When considering which service to use, flexibility to accommodate the changing demands of your business infrastructure is key when looking at IT Service Management.
